“What’s for dinner?”
If you hate hearing that question as much as I do, you’re going to love today’s blog post. I’m about to help you simplify your life just a little bit, and it all starts with planning. Menu planning, that is.
I’ve spent much of my marriage and motherhood dreading the dilemma of what to make for dinner. By the end of the day, my brain and body are tired and all I really want to do is veg out on the couch with my dogs, catching up on General Hospital or binge-watching some Netflix.
But alas, as a mom and wife, it falls on me to make sure my family gets fed every night and I’ve found that planning ahead makes all the difference in the world.
When I’ve got a plan in place, those daily “what’s for dinner” blues are easier to keep at bay.
The planning starts on Saturday morning, when I sit down with a cup of coffee in hand and a dog curled up at my feet, and I start thinking about what I want to make for dinner the coming week.
I keep a notebook of our favorite meals that I can refer to when I can’t think of a thing that I want to cook.
Once I’ve figured out what’s on the menu for the coming week, it’s time to make a grocery list.
I start by checking my pantry, refrigerator, and freezer to see what I’ve got and what I need. Then, I make a shopping list for the grocery store, and of course that always includes something special for my dogs.
Having a weekly menu plan, and knowing that I have everything I need to bring that plan to life, is such a great way to make sure my family is well-fed and I’m not stressed out doing it.
It literally takes less than half an hour to put my menu together, but it saves so much time and worry during the week. Plus, planning ahead makes it a lot easier for us to eat healthy, rather than rummaging through the fridge and pantry and eating junk food.
Planning ahead also means that I’ve got what I need to whip up a batch of my dogs’ favorite treats, and of course they love that!
