A few weeks ago I received an email asking me to review a book. I get a lot of these requests but I’ll be honest: as much as I love to read, it’s just not something I make a lot of time for nowadays. But then I saw the cover of the book, the same image you see above, and I read the book’s tagline: “How a Rough-and-Tumble Rescue Dog Dragged Me Back to Health, Happiness, and God”, and I was convinced.
Saved by Gracie was written by Jan Dunlap who, along with her husband and teen daughter Colleen, adopted a shelter dog named Gracie. Jan didn’t want to adopt a dog; after all, she’d been terrified of dogs most of her life. But Colleen believed that having a dog would make her feel safe and like any mother, Jan wanted to give her daughter that security.
What Jan didn’t know was what she would gain from dog ownership. She’d suffered from depression, and then had to deal with a medical misdiagnosis that left her reeling. She was losing sight of her faith in God and she, well, I’ll let her tell you. Take a look at this video.
Jan writes about how caring for Gracie gave her back her life and ultimately lead her back to God. It’s a real-life story of how one rescued dog actually ended up saving her rescuer. I really identified with much of what Jan wrote because I truly believe my big beautiful girl, Nike Jayne, has saved me.
Two years ago my then 21 year old son nearly died following a heroin overdose. He suffered an anoxic brain injury that left him legally blind, speech impaired, and dependent on me and his dad for a lot of his daily needs.
You can imagine how life-changing an event like this is for the entire family, but what I don’t think anyone realizes is how isolating it is. I work from home now so that I can take care of my son, and most days I don’t actually speak to anyone all day except Nike. She’s my constant companion, and truly my best friend. I would be really lonely without her, and I frequently tell her that I don’t know how I’d get through any of this if it weren’t for her. She inspires me every day to do all I can to make the world a better place, and I consider it an honor to be her momma. She’s the love of my life.
I really do feel like she saved me, and she keeps saving me every single day. If you live with a dog, you know exactly what I mean.
I’d love to share Jan’s great book with you, so how about a giveaway? I’m giving away 5 copies, and to enter to win all you have to do is leave a comment below answering this question: what’s your dog’s name and what does he/she do that enriches your life?
