There’s been so much in the news lately about pet food recalls. How can we possibly know who to trust, when it comes to our pets’ nutritional health?
I used to tell my readers to “read the labels” when selecting a pet food. But the truth is, that’s not enough. The label doesn’t always tell the whole story.
While it’s of the utmost importance to choose pet foods that are made and distributed in the United States, and it’s equally important to know the ingredients in the food you’re buying, that’s not enough.
It’s also important to know where those ingredients are coming from. Let me explain.
Even if a pet food is manufactured and distributed right here in the states, it might be made with ingredients from other countries. The problem with imported ingredients is that the countries they come from very likely don’t have the same standards we have here in the United States, and it’s very possible the meat could be contaminated with bacteria that can make your pet sick… or worse.
What I love about Hill’s Ideal Balance pet food is that they use only the highest-quality ingredients, most of which are sourced from the United States, with all meat and poultry coming from USDA-inspected facilities.
That means the meat and poultry in Ideal Balance is inspected the same way the meat in your local supermarket is inspected. That’s good to know.
It’s also important to note that with Ideal Balance, ingredients sourced from outside the USA are monitored just as strictly as those from the USA. That means Hill’s doesn’t substitute lower-quality ingredients in order to cut corners.
Something else that gives me peace of mind about Ideal Balance is that Hill’s conducts more than 60 quality checks on every batch of food, and more than 1,000 Salmonella tests are conducted every month.
Ideal Balance is a natural pet food that provides perfectly balanced nutrition, made with natural ingredients you can see right on the bag. It contains no corn, wheat, soy, or artificial flavors or preservatives – stuff your pets simply do not need – and it’s formulated for both dogs and cats.
I haven’t felt this good about feeding my dogs and cat a commercial pet food in a very long time. I strongly suggest doing your research, reading labels, even contacting the manufacturer before choosing a food for your pet.
Have you tried Ideal Balance? I’d love to know about your experience – get in on the conversation by leaving a comment below.

No, I haven’t tried Ideal Balance, but I’m a big fan of Science Diet, which was recommended by my super special vet and is all I get fed these days.
I divide my time between Switzerland and the United States and I buy Dr Hill’s on whatever side of the pond I happen to be on. When I’m in Switzerland, we buy Dr Hill’s in Italy because there’s a huge price difference. 🙂
When I read your line about “choos[ing] pet foods that are made and distributed in the United States”, I had my parents check where my Italian Dr Hill’s kibble is made. The bag just says it’s “Made in the European Union”. It’d be nice if they were more specific, given that there are now as many as 28 countries in the EU. In any case, they have very strict rules over here as well, and the kibble tastes just as good. 🙂
