Last spring, I shared this recipe for doggy breath mints, and it was a huge hit. I got so many messages from dog parents who were so happy to find a yummy, wholesome treat that also seemed to help tame their mutt’s doggy breath.
A few weeks ago, I was perusing Etsy when I came across a mint and parsley dog treat that also claimed to be great for giving dogs a “fresh minty smile”, and I decided I’d like to try and put together my own recipe. After all, I’m a huge believer that what comes out of my own kitchen is far better for my dogs than anything I could ever buy from a store.
And wa la, this recipe was born.

Trust me when I tell you that dogs love mint for its mildly spicy sweetness. I’ve used mint in many recipes for my dogs, and it’s always a hit.
Both Nike and Georgie love these mint & parsley treats, and while I don’t know for sure that the treats actually help get rid of doggy breath, they definitely make my dogs happy.
And that makes me happy because the recipe uses healthy ingredients. It’s easy to whip up a batch in no time, and of course I love the way my dogs hang out with me in the kitchen, just knowing that I’m making something for them.
I love to use different cookie cutters when making treats for my dogs. The bone-shaped ones are almost always my first choice, but occasionally I’ll go with something else. This cookie cutter set from Amazon is one of my favorites, and so reasonably priced, too.

Like I said, I can’t guarantee this treat is going to tame that awful doggy breath, but I can almost promise your dogs will love them. And if you’re anything like me, that will put a smile on your face.
- 2.5 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup water
- 1 T vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup quick oats
- 2 T fresh mint, chopped
- 1/3 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 10-12 drops green food coloring
- Preheat oven to 350 F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, combine the flour, oats, oil, water, and herbs. Mix well.
- Add food coloring, then knead the dough until color is evenly dispersed.
- Roll out the dough on parchment paper, using extra flour as needed so it doesn't stick.
- Roll out about 1/4 to 1/2 thickness.
- Use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes.
- Place on lined baking sheet and bake for 35 minutes.
- Let treats cool before serving.
- Treats may be stored in an air tight container for 2 weeks, or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

I’ve always read that parsley is good for dogs’ breath too, so I often include it in treats or in their homemade meal toppers. I’m definitely just more concerned about whether they’ll like them or not anyway (not that they’re picky, trust me!).
I love your homemade dog treat recipes. Definitely trying this one for my doggies!
This dog treats looks so great! Thank you for sharing the recipe! Mint and parsley is also good for dog’s breath. Gonna make this treats for my dog.
Gonna make these dog treats for my dog. Thank you for the recipe! The bone-shaped is also my favorite choice when I make dog treats.
How many 2 1/2 inch by 2 1/2 inch dog treats does the recipe make?
Why or why would you give dogs food coloring? It’s bad enough that we give it to humans to make food “look more appealing “ but dogs are color blind. You nullify the whole point of healthy homemade treats by doing so.
Can we store them in the fridge?
And can we use dried herbs?
Yes and yes! 🙂
Hi Christina,
I added 1 whole bunch of mint, half a bunch of parsley, 2 grated carrots, 10 drops each of both fennel and peppermint essential oils.
The fennel helps with suppressing appetite and peppermint well it just smells amazing.
I hope that these biscuits improve my gutsy labradors stinky fish breath.
