How safe is your dog’s collar?
As pet parents, there are so many things for us to consider when we think about keeping our furry babies happy, healthy, and safe. Are we feeding them a healthy diet? Are they getting enough exercise? Are they properly vaccinated each year? The list goes on and on.
One thing I never gave much thought to, when it comes to my dog’s safety, is her collar. I mean, a collar is a collar is a collar… right? There’s no possible way my dog’s collar could harm her.
Or is there?
I was shocked to learn that an estimated 26,000 collar strangulation incidents occur each year, and more than 50 percent of veterinarians, trainers, and doggy daycares that took part in a recent survey indicated they’ve experienced a collar-related accident with a dog, and the majority of of these accidents happen when two dogs are “play biting” each other. Yikes! That’s scary! For some examples of these accidents, take a look at this short video:
Heartbreaking, isn’t it? And that’s exactly why PetSafe® observed the first annual Collar Safety Awareness Week earlier this month. Their goal is to help educate the public about the risks of strangulation and dangers of traditional collars, and to introduce the KeepSafe Break-Away Collar.
Take a look at this infographic below to learn a little bit about collar safety, and we’ll chat some more below.
Nike and I had a chance to try out the KeepSafe Break-Away Collar, and we really like it. Thankfully we haven’t experienced any collar-related incidents, but seeing how the Break-Away Collar works definitely gives a dog mom some peace of mind. The collar’s patented break-away safety buckle releases when pressure is applied, so if Nike’s collar were to get stuck on something and she were to start to choke, I know the buckle would release quickly and the collar would fall off before any harm could come to her.
See what I mean? Peace of mind.

Another killer of dogs that is often unknown is potato chips bags. Suffocation. It is common.
I like both blue & purple, since our two pups are brother & sister 🙂 This is definitely an interesting product, although I can’t help but say that supervision of dogs is a huge preventative measure. I would never let my dogs run around somewhere unsupervised.
Hmmmmm…..purple? Or maybe red? I like both.
