A few years ago on a Sunday afternoon, I let my dogs outside into our fenced back yard. Because it was a little rainy outside, I didn’t leave them alone for long but when I went to let them in, Sophie my then 8-year old Schnorkie {schnauzer-yorkie mix} was missing. I called her name several times, but there was no sign of her.
Of course, I freaked way out.
I couldn’t understand it. Our yard was secure, and we’d never had an issue with the dogs getting out of it. But we knew that Sophie was gone.
Before we could get in the car to go look for her, our home phone rang. A voice I didn’t recognize said, “Hey, I’ve got your dog over here.” He gave me the address, which was just a couple of blocks away, so my husband and son went to pick up the dog.
What the caller didn’t tell me was that as he was driving down the street, my dog had run into the road and he had hit her with his car.
WOW! What a terrible experience but I am so glad the man stopped and notified you. Tags are important and should always be worn!
Absolutely, Emily! My situation is proof that a simple little tag can change a dog’s life! Thanks for stopping by! Come back again to visit! 🙂
Hi! I’m so glad that kind man stopped to help your Sophie! My girls always have their collars/tags on. And since we have a neighbor who used to think it was great fun to antagonize them with his BB gun, they are never alone in the yard. (While he hasn’t done it in a few years, I doubt I will ever trust him not to.)
And then there was the time Callie and Shadow pushed the gate open and took themselves for a walk along the creek on the other side of the street and ended up at the church parking lot on the upper end of our road. A very nice lady – who had a Golden of her own – saw them, called them to her, put them in her car, and called our vet. The vet then called us and I was up there in a flash to meet her. I offered her money that she wouldn’t take and unending thank yous. From that day forward, the gate has always been chained and padlocked when the girls were out in the yard. And, soon after that, I hired a pet sitter to check on/play with them a few times a day while we were at work. (I admit that back then we were not the most responsible pet owners, but we learned our lesson in a hurry!)
Good to hear that there are still good people out there. Dog ID tags are one way to do your part in taking care of your adventurous canine friend.
