Today is National Dog Fighting Awareness Day (NDFAD), and while it might be hard to believe, dog fighting is still a very big problem throughout the United States. Sadly, it’s happening everywhere. Big cities, small towns, and rural communities – no area is immune to the horrendous “sport” of dog fighting. In fact, it’s happening near where you live right now.
Even if you don’t own a dog, you are still impacted by this highly illegal and especially cruel practice when it’s happening in your neighborhood. From where I sit, dog fighting is everyone’s problem, and we all should be doing everything we can to put an end to this barbaric act.
How Can YOU Help?
The ASPCA has provided a list of 10 ways to help end dog fighting, and to put it simply, it all starts when you get involved. Volunteer and educate others; be aware of what’s going on in your own neighborhood and report suspicious activity; protect your own pets; and support stronger laws to punish those who engage in this unimaginable mistreatment of innocent dogs.
According to the ASPCA, in 2014, the US Department of Justice prosecuted 10 federal dog fighting cases and secured the longest sentence (8 years) ever received in a federal dog fighting case.
This is a great start and while we’ve made significant strides, dog fighting continues in communities across the country with thousands of dogs suffering every year. It’s important to let the DOJ know that we expect them to continue to punish dog fighters to the fullest extent of the law. Please consider signing the ASPCA’s letter to the US Department of Justice, asking them to prosecute dog fighters with greater frequency this year. Click here to sign now! This is such a simple yet effective way to make a difference for these dogs in need of a voice.
