This weekend is Cinco de Mayo. Not only is it the anniversary of the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War, but it’s also become a celebration of Mexican-American culture here in the United States. We commemorate the day with parades, parties, mariachi music, and traditional Mexican foods.
Would you believe that while you’re partaking of tacos and Coronas, your dog can actually join in on the Cinco de Mayo fun? It’s true, and today I’m sharing a recipe for a Fiesta Bowl that both you and your dog will love.
As you’ll see below, this recipe is filled with wholesome, healthy ingredients that will delight your dog’s taste buds. My dogs love green pepper, and the beans are great for protein. Turmeric has so many amazing benefits, and all of these ingredients combine to make a healthy and delicious Cinco de Mayo treat that your dog will get super excited about, I promise. I know mine sure do!
At my house, we’ll be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with pork poblano tacos for the hubby and fish tacos for me, as well as a few margaritas and some great music. As long as the weather cooperates, we’ll spend the day on our deck and all will be right in the world.
And you can bet that Nike and Georgie will be right there with us, enjoying their own Cinco de Mayo treat. Get the recipe below!
- 1 T extra virgin olive oil
- 1/2 green pepper, holiholiseeded and chopped
- 1/2 C cooked rice
- 1/4 C canned beans
- 1 t turmeric
- 1/2 small tomato, seeded and chopped
- 2 T shredded cheese
- In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add green pepper and cook until softened, about 3-5 minutes.
- Mix in the rice, beans, and turmeric, and cook until throughly heated.
- Move skillet from stove and add tomato, stirring well.
- Cool for a few minutes then top with the cheese and serve!
No matter how you plan to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, always include your dog in the festivities and please drink responsibly.
