I love for my home to smell fresh and clean. But with 2 dogs, a cat, and kids in the house, fresh and clean can really be a challenge.
There are a lot of products on the market that claim to get rid of odors, but I’ve got 2 problems with most of them:
First, they really don’t get rid of odors; they simply mask them.
And second, so many of these products are just not safe. They’re filled with toxic chemicals that aren’t good for our families, including our 4-legged companions.

So what’s a dog mom to do if she wants a nice-smelling home without all the chemicals? Well, I’m glad you asked because I’ve got the perfect solution: this do-it-yourself pet-safe carpet sprinkle!
I’ve written before about using essential oils with dogs, and this simple recipe for a pet-safe carpet sprinkle includes some of my favorites oils.
You can use many of your favorite essential oils to create a fragrance that is unique to your home and family. I chose a blend of bergamot, tangerine, and lemongrass oils for a fresh, citrusy scent.
The scent combinations you can create are endless, but always make sure you’re using oils that are safe for pets. If you have questions, consult your veterinarian.

To use your delightfully-scented carpet sprinkle, simply shake a little onto your carpets, pet beds, furniture, or any area that needs a little freshening up. Let it sit on the surface for a few minutes, then use your vacuum cleaner to sweep it all up.
You’re left with a pleasant lingering scent, and you can rest easy knowing that the ingredients are safe for your entire family.
- 1 box Baking Soda
- Essential Oils of Your Choice
- A Shaker Jar
- Add the baking soda to the shaker jar.
- Add 40-50 drops of your favorite essential oil. You can use different oils to create your own custom scent.
- Shake well.
- Shake well before each use. Store in a cool, dark place away from pets and kids.
