A friend called me yesterday to say that she and her husband have finally decided the kids are old enough for a dog, and now she’s tasked with the challenge of finding the perfect one for her family. She wanted my advice.
Choosing the right dog is so important, and it’s something that shouldn’t be taken lightly because a dog is a 12 to 15 year commitment. There are so many things to consider… things like how big the dog will get and how much exercise and grooming it will require are just the tip of the iceberg.
I strongly advise you to do your research. Go online and learn about the breeds you’re interested in. Talk to other owners. Ask your veterinarian.
Think about your own lifestyle. Will you and your family be able to commit to the care and training of a dog?
I like this infographic because it provides a little information about 10 of the most popular dog breeds. Take a look, and we’ll chat some more below.
As I mentioned above, it’s important to remember that some breeds can live as long as 15 years, so when you add a mutt to your family you really are making a long-term commitment. As with any serious relationship, make sure the one you choose is the one you truly want to spend your life with.
Oh, and one last thought: keep in mind that all of the breeds mentioned above can be found in shelters and rescues any day of the week. Rescue dogs make excellent family pets and by adopting a homeless animal, you’re saving 2 lives – the one you take home and the one the shelter now has room for. And you just might find your new friend returns the favor and saves you just a little bit, too!
