In the month of March, we often think about luck. Specifically, the luck of the Irish and St. Patrick’s Day. But for this month’s Appreciate the Moments photo challenge, I’m thinking about luck in a different way.
A few years ago, my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. If you’ve ever known anyone with this disease, you know that it is really awful. As time has passed, my mom no longer knows who any of us are, including my dad most days. It’s really heartbreaking to know that she no longer has all the memories we spent years making and that basically she lives in a world where everything is unfamiliar and always different.
But I know I’m lucky. I’m lucky because even though she doesn’t know my name, doesn’t know that I’m her daughter, she is still here and I can still hear her laugh and see her smile. I can still tell her that I love her, and she’ll even say it back to me although she’s not quite sure who I am.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve witnessed so many friends lose one or both of their parents, but I’m lucky because I’ve still got both of mine, and I couldn’t ask for better ones. Lucky and blessed, that’s me.
