Last week, my 13 year old niece’s best friend found a stray dog. The original story I was told was that the girl tried to return the dog to the address on her ID tag, but the owners said they no longer wanted her. Seriously? Who could ever give up that face!
My niece, Rebekah, took the dog, a tiny sweetheart named Lucy, home with her but we knew this was just a temporary situation since pets aren’t permitted at the apartments where she lives with her mom, my sister-in-law Julie. Bekah really wanted me to take Lucy, knowing that we’d recently lost Sadie and perhaps I could use the companionship. As cute as Lucy is, I knew I’d have a hard time convincing TLPB Dad that we needed another dog.
But over the course of 4 days, I fell crazy in love with this little furball and I’d begun to seriously consider what it would be like to have her as a part of our family. She was an absolute sweetheart who was well-behaved, housebroken, and apparently totally enamored of car rides – we couldn’t even walk by a car without her pausing by the door, waiting to hop inside.
So I decided that I’d ask my hubby if we could give this little nugget a forever home. But then my sister-in-law told me that through the magic of the internet, she’d located Lucy’s owners (dang you, Facebook!), and they had in fact been frantically looking for her and missing her for 4 days. No one had tried to return Lucy to them, and they most certainly did want her back.
To say that my heart was a little broken would be an understatement. I sobbed when I got the news that Lucy would be going home to her family on Sunday, and I sobbed again the next day when I thought about the sweet little stray that was my almost forever friend.
I’m happy, though, knowing that sweet Lucy has been returned to a home where she is loved and wanted, and Julie assured me that when Lucy was reunited with her family, it was clear they all had missed each other.
So this week’s 52 Snapshots of Life photo is dedicated to my FAVORITE little stray of all time, Miss Lucy. I wish her a long life of happiness and love with a family that’s so very blessed to have her, and I thank her for mending my broken heart just a little bit.
